WeaponLord is a barbarian themed fighting game developed by Visual Concepts Entertainment and published by Namco Hometek for the Sega Genesis in 1995. Seven warriors, each armed with a weapon set of their own, clash across a brutal fantasy world on the way to their ultimate foe, the mysterious Demonlord. Every fighter carries a personal storyline between the arenas, jungles and fiery mountains of the game. The main claim to fame of WeaponLord is its weapon play, an early take on armed combat in the fighting genre, backed by hand drawn backgrounds that are meticulously detailed.
Matches are one on one, for a single player against the machine or two players head to head. Blocking and combos are in place, joined by special frenzies that raise your attack power and by death combos for finishing an opponent in style. Weapons give each warrior a different reach and rhythm, so reading your opponent counts for more than raw speed, and WeaponLord asks for a level of precision that sets it apart from the lighter fighters of its years.
Players remember WeaponLord for its dark art style and for how seriously it takes its combat, and it has aged into a cult favorite among fighting fans who like something with teeth. As a late 16 bit fighter built around weapons, it carries real historical interest for anyone following how armed fighting games developed. For collectors, WeaponLord is one of those Genesis cartridges that is talked about more often than it is played, and it is worth owning for both of those reasons.
