We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story - for SNES

We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story is a platform game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Visual Concepts and published by Hi-Tech Expressions in 1993, based on the animated film about dinosaurs brought forward into the modern world. The Super Nintendo version is very much its own thing. It is not the same game as the Genesis release, and while it uses the characters from the film it tells a separate story: Professor Screw Eyes has kidnapped Louie and Cecilia, so Captain Neweyes and the dinosaurs set off through a series of time periods to bring them home.

Play is side scrolling and centered on Rex, who runs and jumps through five stages, dodging traps and dealing with the enemies scattered across each one. His friends Elsa, Woog, Vorb and Dweeb turn up from time to time to lend a hand, and power ups found along the way increase and replenish his health. The time travel premise gives the stages their variety, each period bringing a look and a set of hazards of its own. Up to two players are supported, and the pacing is friendly enough that younger players can make real progress without help.

We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story is remembered fondly by people who saw the film young and found the game soon after, and it still plays as a bright, good natured platformer with cheerful art and an easy rhythm. It is also a genuine curiosity, because the Super Nintendo game and the Genesis game are different from one another, so owning this one means owning a version of the story that exists nowhere else. As a licensed platformer from 1993, We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story earns its place on any shelf of sixteen bit oddities.
