Whomp 'Em - for NES

Whomp 'Em is a platform game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Jaleco in 1991. You play a young Native American hero who sets out with a spear to face whatever waits in eight separate worlds, and unknown perils lurk behind every corner. What makes Whomp 'Em stand out is its shape: rather than marching you down one fixed path, it opens its worlds up and lets you choose your own adventure, picking the order in which you take them on.

Play is clean and quick. You run, jump and strike with your spear, and along the way you gather seven powerful magical objects that serve as special abilities once they are yours, so the hero you finish with is far better equipped than the one you started with. Each of the eight worlds ends in a grapple with an evil beast, and clearing one opens the way to the rest. Whomp 'Em is a single player game, and the freedom to pick your route means two runs through it rarely feel the same. Players who know the Mega Man games will recognize the rhythm straight away.

Whomp 'Em has kept a warm following because it is generous and good natured: the controls are friendly, the worlds are colorful, and the challenge invites you back instead of pushing you away. It is the kind of platformer you can hand to someone who has never held an NES controller, and it still rewards a player who wants to master its routes and its magical objects. In a collection Whomp 'Em sits nicely beside the bigger names of the era, a Jaleco platformer with character of its own, easy to recommend and easy to love.
