Wings 2 - Aces High - for SNES

Wings 2: Aces High drops you five thousand meters over France, with enemy planes prowling nearby and your finger on the trigger. Developed by Acme Interactive and published by Namco in 1992 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Wings 2: Aces High builds a game around the swirling air battles of the First World War. What sets it apart is the mix: arcade style control that answers the moment you move the stick, joined to sharp digitized graphics that forged a new standard for flight games.

Wings 2 keeps you in the cockpit rather than in a menu. You slam the stick forward into a screaming dive, line up a target, and feel the plane shudder from the recoil of tracer splitting machine guns. Chop the throttle, yank back, and a pursuing Fokker overshoots and fills your sights. Enemy pilots do not fly in neat lines: one will roll high over his smoking wingman and come at you out of the sun. It is a one player game, so every mistake is yours, and flying tough through a cockpit full of bullet holes is part of the job.

Players still love Wings 2: Aces High because few games put you into a biplane fight this directly, without burying it under switches and gauges. It asks for timing and nerve instead of study, which makes it easy to hand to a friend who has never flown anything. For collectors, a Namco published flight title from 1992 sits in a quieter corner of the Super Nintendo library, and Wings 2: Aces High is one of the more memorable entries there. On a shelf of fighting games and platformers, it is the cartridge people pick up and ask about.
