Wiz 'n' Liz - for Genesis

Wiz 'n' Liz is a bright, fast moving action platformer for the Sega Genesis, developed by Raising Hell Software and published by Psygnosis in 1994. Wiz and Liz are two magicians who live on the planet Pum, where they brew potions, cast spells and look after a flock of rabbit shaped creatures called wabbits. One day a concoction goes badly wrong and scatters every wabbit to distant corners of Pum, so the pair set out to bring them all home. What sets Wiz 'n' Liz apart is its speed and its color: very few platformers on the system run this quickly or look this cheerful while doing it.

Each stage is a race against the clock. Playing as either Wiz or Liz, you sprint left and right gathering up wabbits before the timer empties. Every wabbit you catch sends floating letters into the air, and those letters are used to spell the magic word displayed at the top of the screen. Complete the word and the rescued wabbits leave behind fruit, stars and clocks that add time back to the counter. A glowing orange orb also appears during the last ten seconds of the count and grants a further thirty, which turns the closing moments of a stage into a glorious scramble. Two players can take part together, one as Wiz and one as Liz.

Wiz 'n' Liz is still loved for its momentum and its humor: it is a game about running, grabbing and spelling at full tilt, and it rewards anyone who learns a stage well enough to read it at speed. It arrived late in the life of the Genesis and remains one of the console's quieter cult favorites, which is exactly why collectors go looking for it. If your shelf already holds the famous mascot platformers, Wiz 'n' Liz is the cheerful oddball that will surprise visitors.
