Wonder Boy in Monster World - for Genesis

Wonder Boy in Monster World is an action platformer with a strong role playing streak, developed by Westone and published for the Sega Genesis by Sega of America in 1991. Legions of monsters have overrun the planet and the townsfolk are hiding behind their doors, so it falls to Wonder Boy to arm himself and drive the beasts back. Part of the long running Wonder Boy family of games, Wonder Boy in Monster World stands out for the way it blends straightforward side scrolling combat with towns, shops, gold and steadily better equipment, giving a platformer the shape of a proper adventure.

You travel through linked areas, clearing monsters, collecting gold and spending it in town on sharper swords, stronger armor, shields, boots and magic. Searching is a real part of the design: clues from townspeople, hidden doors and tucked away items all reward players who stop to look rather than simply pressing forward, and the undead and other stubborn enemies often ask for the right gear or spell instead of brute force. Boss fights close out each stretch of the journey, and because your character keeps growing, a wall that stopped you an hour ago can later be walked straight through. It is a single player quest, built to be played across several sittings as Wonder Boy gets tougher.

Wonder Boy in Monster World is remembered as one of the warmest things on the Genesis: inviting artwork, chunky animation, music people still hum decades later and a difficulty curve that is firm but fair. It is also the game many players used to discover the wider series, and it works the same way for newcomers today. For collectors, Wonder Boy in Monster World is a cornerstone of the Genesis action role playing shelf and a natural companion to the rest of Westone's work, a cartridge you return to rather than one that sits in a box.
