World Cup '98 - for N64

World Cup '98 is a soccer game for the Nintendo 64, developed by Software Creations and published by Electronic Arts in 1998. It was built around the tournament held in France that summer, and it carries all 32 qualifying teams, complete with the players fans were watching on television at the time. The pitch is simple: win the world for your country. World Cup '98 puts a single tournament at the heart of everything, which gives it a focus that the league based soccer games of the period did not always have.

Play runs from the group stage through to the final, and you can steer your side as the match unfolds. Attacking strategy and formation can be changed at the press of a button, and preset plays can be run at critical points, so a tight game can be turned by a decision rather than a lucky shot. World Cup '98 also includes World Cup Classics, a selection of eight of the most thrilling World Cup final matches ever played, and up to four players can share the controllers for a tournament of their own.

Players still enjoy World Cup '98 because tournament soccer suits a cartridge so well. There is a clear goal, a short road to it, and every match matters, which is the feeling the real competition trades on. The four player support makes it a good pick for a room full of people with different favorite teams. For collectors, World Cup '98 is a snapshot of France 98 preserved on the Nintendo 64, and it fits naturally alongside the other Electronic Arts sports titles on the system.
