World Heroes 2 - for SNES

World Heroes 2 picks up a year after the first tournament ended without a clear winner. Developed by Saurus and published by Takara in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, World Heroes 2 brings back the eight heroes of the first game and gathers eight new challengers to settle the question once and for all. The headline is the size of it: fourteen playable fighters, plus the morphing Neo Geegus and Dia, the two bosses that gave arcade players so much trouble, for sixteen selectable characters in all.

This sequel adds a layer of new systems to the fighting. Counter throws let you answer a grab with a grab, and the Repelling move turns an incoming attack back on the attacker, so reading your opponent pays as much as speed does. There are twenty three stages including survival stages, three selectable speed settings to set the pace you like, and same character select, so two players can put identical heroes against each other for a dream match. Even the life gauge is part of the design, with a life gauge mask and a seesaw gauge among the options.

World Heroes 2 is the entry fans point to when they argue the series deserved more attention. The bigger roster, the counter throw and the repelling system give it more depth than the first game, and the speed settings mean you can tune it to taste rather than live with someone else's idea of fast. For collectors, this is the Super Nintendo version of a game arcade players knew well, and World Heroes 2 is a 1994 fighting cartridge that still holds up with a second player in the room. It belongs anywhere a fighting shelf is more than the obvious names.
