World Trophy Soccer - for Genesis

World Trophy Soccer is a soccer game for the Sega Genesis, developed by Game Arts and published by Virgin Games in 1992. It appeared in Europe as European Club Soccer and in Japan as J. League Champion Soccer, and it is a reworking of Manchester United Europe, keeping that game's side on view camera while pulling the lens back for a wider look at the pitch. Rather than national squads, World Trophy Soccer gathers the club sides that were in contention for the three main European tournaments at the time it was made, though the player names are invented and a few of the kits are not quite right.

Matches play out from that broad side view, with a referee active on the field and cutscenes marking the progress of the game as it unfolds. Two approaches are offered: arcade for a faster, looser match, and simulation for something closer to real football, with six different formations so you can push forward or hold a shape at the back. Support runs all the way to eight players, which is unusually generous, so a full room can take a club each and settle a tournament in an evening instead of passing one pad around.

World Trophy Soccer is remembered fondly as a snapshot of European club football at the start of the nineties, a time capsule of who was in contention and how the game was played, and it still serves up a quick, readable match.
