Wrestle War - for Genesis

Wrestle War is a wrestling game developed by SIMS and published by Sega Enterprises for the Mega Drive in 1991. You play Bruce Blade, a rookie professional fighting his way through a series of bouts toward the championship of the Sega Wrestling Alliance, a promotion invented for the game. There are no real world wrestlers and no licensed tournament here, although plenty of the opponents carry a knowing resemblance to famous wrestlers and movie characters of the era. Wrestle War never arrived in North America, despite advertising of the time suggesting a release was once planned, so many players on that side of the world meet it for the first time here.

The ring is presented in a clever pseudo 3D style. Everything on screen is built from sprites, yet the wrestlers move along both axes, and when your view gets blocked the whole ring snaps ninety degrees to a better angle, a neat trick that keeps the action readable at all times. The move set is deliberately compact: punch, kick and grab, with grapples opening the way to throws and holds. The aim is to wear an opponent's life bar down and then pin them, so bouts become a matter of reading your rival, picking the moment and finishing cleanly. A second player can step in for a match between friends.

Wrestle War holds up because it is crisp and confident. The sprites are bold, the animation is snappy and the rotating ring still feels inventive, which is a lot to say about a wrestling game from 1991. Players who like their fighting games lean and readable tend to warm to it quickly. For collectors, Wrestle War is one of the more sought after Mega Drive wrestling cartridges and a real conversation starter, especially next to the licensed wrestling games that filled the rest of the decade.
