WWF Raw - for Genesis

WWF Raw is a wrestling game developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment for the Sega Genesis in 1994, built around the World Wrestling Federation roster of the day. Up to twelve superstars appear, among them Bret Hart, Bam Bam Bigelow, Diesel, Doink, Lex Luger, Luna Vachon, Owen Hart, Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker and Yokozuna. What makes WWF Raw stand out is scale: a long list of moves and a stack of match types rather than one mode repeated, which is why it is remembered as the biggest of Acclaim's Genesis wrestling games.

Wrestling here is a contest of power meters. You chip away at an opponent until they can fight no more, then pin them to the mat. The move list runs deep, taking in turnbuckle maneuvers and a good deal of illegal business, including a swing of a metal folding chair. The match types cover One on One, Tag Team, Bedlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, Raw Endurance Match and Rematch, and the game supports up to four simultaneous players, which turns Bedlam and Royal Rumble into exactly the noisy free for all their names promise.

Players still reach for WWF Raw because it captures a particular moment in wrestling: those names, that roster, that noise. It is also one of the easiest party games on the console, since the controls are simple enough for a newcomer to follow after a single match while the deeper moves keep regulars busy. For collectors, WWF Raw is a Genesis wrestling essential and the natural partner to WWF Royal Rumble, the game it followed a year later. Keep it near the console: it is the cartridge you load when four people all want in at once.
