WWF Royal Rumble came to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It builds directly on WWF Super WrestleMania with a bigger sixteen meg cartridge, twelve of the World Wrestling Federation's best known superstars, and a rowdier idea of what a wrestling match can be. The name tells you where the attention went: the Royal Rumble itself, with six wrestlers in the ring at the same time, which is something very few games of the era attempted and the reason WWF Royal Rumble is still the one people name first.

Every superstar comes with their own trademark moves, and the basics are all there to work with: atomic drops, headbutts, piledrives and dropkicks. Beyond the standard match there is a no holds barred brawl with no referee and no rules, where choke holds, eye gouges and back breaking chair slams are all fair, and Tournament Mania, a run at the Championship Belt. The six wrestler Rumble is the centerpiece, a crowded fight to be the last one standing. Two players can share the ring, which turns the brawl into the kind of grudge match that goes on all evening.

Players keep coming back to WWF Royal Rumble for its pace and its sense of occasion, and for a Rumble mode that still feels generous with so much happening on one screen. It is an easy game to teach someone in a minute and hard to put down once a belt is in sight. For collectors, WWF Royal Rumble sits in the middle of the Super NES wrestling trilogy from Sculptured Software, and it is the one most often recommended, so it is a fair place either to start a wrestling shelf or to finish one.
