X-Men - for Genesis

X-Men brought Marvel's mutants to the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Western Technologies and published by Sega of America. The plot is comic book through and through: Magneto has created the world's deadliest computer virus, built for one purpose, to destroy the Uncanny X-Men, and the hunt for him leads all the way to his secret base on Asteroid M. What sets X-Men apart is its respect for the source material, with a large cast and a look lifted straight from the page.

Play is a mix of action and platforming across stages that twist back on themselves, and you choose your mutant before each one: Wolverine and his adamantium claws, Gambit and his energy charged playing cards, Cyclops and his optic blast, or Nightcrawler and his speed. Storm, Iceman, Archangel, Jean Grey and Rogue can be called in for a brief assist when a room turns hostile, and two players are supported. Waiting in ambush are Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Mojo and Deathbird, and X-Men is also remembered for one notorious late moment that asks you to reset the console itself.

Players still return to X-Men because it feels like an issue of the comic you can hold in your hands, demanding and occasionally unfair in the way early nineties action games often were, but generous with character and atmosphere. For collectors it is one of the essential Marvel titles on the Genesis, a 1993 release that anyone who grew up with the cartoon or the comics will recognize instantly. X-Men earns its place on the shelf and plays just as well today.
