Xardion - for SNES

Xardion is a Super Nintendo action platformer with role playing touches, developed by Jorudan and published by Asmik Corporation of America in 1992. The Alpha-1 solar system is under attack, and three cyborgs, Alcedes, Triton and Panthera, set their differences aside to defend it. Their search carries them to the far regions of the galaxy and to the legend the game is named for: Xardion, a cyborg thought destroyed long ago, held in place by a moat of hydrochloric acid until the three of them arrive. Those were big promises for 1992, and Xardion largely keeps them.

Xardion sits between genres on purpose, mixing action and adventure with the kind of growth you expect from a role playing game. You choose your next destination, fight through side view stages full of hostile machines and creatures, and switch between Alcedes, Triton and Panthera as the situation calls for it, since each cyborg has its own strengths and soft spots. The characters grow stronger the longer you play, which takes some of the sting out of the harder stretches. The cartridge was sold on its eight megs and its battery backed save, which lets you keep your progress at any point instead of hunting for the next checkpoint.

Xardion has held on to a loyal following thanks to its tone. It is moodier and more deliberate than most Super Nintendo platformers, with hulking mech designs and a real sense of a galaxy thinning out around you. The character switching keeps the long stretches interesting, and the save system makes it far more approachable today than many of its peers. For collectors, Xardion is one of those Asmik published titles that rarely comes up next to the big names, which is exactly why it deserves shelf space, both as a curiosity and as a game you can genuinely sit down and finish.
