A Classic 90s Beat Em Up Worth Playing Today
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie on the Super Nintendo is one of those licensed games that completely overdelivered. Released in 1995 alongside the movie, this SNES beat em up is still remembered as one of the best Power Rangers games ever made, and honestly, one of the better licensed games on the system.
If you grew up in the 90s, this game hits instantly. Big sprites, loud sound effects, nonstop action, and that feeling that you are controlling the Rangers exactly as you remember them from the movie. No filler. No gimmicks. Just classic side scrolling brawling.
At its core, this is a straightforward beat em up in the style of Final Fight. You move left to right, clear screens full of enemies, and throw out punches, kicks, jumps, and screen clearing special moves when things get overwhelming. IGN retrospectives have often pointed out that the controls feel responsive and polished compared to other Power Rangers games of the era.
Each Ranger has slightly different speed and attack feel, but the balance is solid. Reddit retro gaming threads frequently mention that you can pick any Ranger based purely on nostalgia and still finish the game without feeling punished for your choice.
This is absolutely a two player game. Co op mode turns it into pure SNES chaos in the best way. Enemies swarm the screen, explosions go off constantly, and teamwork actually matters. Many retro sites and long time fans rank this as one of the best couch co op beat em ups on the SNES, especially among licensed titles.
For a movie tie in, the visuals are surprisingly strong. The Rangers are large and expressive, enemies are varied enough to stay interesting, and the boss fights actually feel like boss fights. Several retro review sites have noted that the sprite work feels closer to arcade quality than most SNES movie games, which is why it still looks good today.
The soundtrack keeps the pace moving without becoming annoying. It does not rely entirely on the TV theme, which helps it feel more like a proper game instead of a looping promo.
This is not an easy game. Difficulty spikes can hit hard, especially in later stages or when playing solo. Some levels drag slightly longer than they should, and the combat depth is simple compared to genre giants. IGN and other retro reviewers usually land on the same conclusion here. It is fun, solid, and well made, but not revolutionary.
Still, that simplicity works in its favor. It is easy to pick up, satisfying to play, and perfect for short sessions or co op runs.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers The Movie on SNES is a licensed game done right. It understands its audience, respects the source material, and delivers exactly what fans want. Fast action, big sprites, and nonstop nostalgia.
Score: 8.5 out of 10
